Hiking in the Everglades doesn't look like hiking anywhere else. There are no mountain switchbacks or forest canopy — most trails here are short boardwalks over open marsh, built specifically to put you close to alligators, wading birds, and sawgrass prairie without needing a boat. A few longer routes exist for people who want more distance. Here's every real trail in the park, organized by which side you're entering from.

Quick Answer

If you only have time for one trail, make it the Anhinga Trail (0.8 miles, near the main entrance) — it's the single most reliable spot in the park to see alligators up close. If you're entering from the Miami side, the Shark Valley loop (15 miles, tram or bike) is the equivalent must-do. Most other trails here are 15-30 minute add-ons, not full outings on their own.

Homestead Side: Main Park Road Trails

These trails run along the main park road between the Ernest F. Coe entrance and Flamingo, and can mostly be combined into a single day.

Anhinga Trail — 0.8 miles round trip, boardwalk over a freshwater slough at Royal Palm. The best wildlife-viewing trail in the park; alligators and wading birds are often visible within a few feet of the boardwalk.
Gumbo Limbo Trail — 0.4 miles round trip, paired with Anhinga at the same Royal Palm trailhead. A shaded loop through tropical hardwood hammock, a sharp contrast to Anhinga's open marsh just steps away.
Pinelands Trail — 0.4 miles round trip, paved and wheelchair accessible, through rare pine rockland habitat.
Pa-hay-okee Trail — a quarter-mile boardwalk to an elevated overlook of the sawgrass \"river of grass\" — one of the most photographed views in the park for the shortest walk required to get it.
Mahogany Hammock Trail — 0.5 miles round trip, a boardwalk loop through a dense hardwood hammock home to some of the largest mahogany trees in the country.
West Lake Trail — 0.5 miles round trip, a boardwalk through a mangrove forest near the southern end of the main park road, close to Flamingo.

If the boardwalk trails feel too short, Long Pine Key has real mileage. Long Pine Key Trail is part of a connected 22-mile network through pine rockland habitat, with a main 7-mile route from the campground to Pine Glades Lake — flat, dry, and popular with both hikers and mountain bikers. For something shorter, Three-in-One Trail is an easy 0.7-mile loop right at the Long Pine Key picnic area, good for a quick walk or a warm-up. For serious distance, Old Ingraham Highway follows the crumbling remains of the park's original 1922 road for about 11 miles one way — popular with cyclists, quieter for hikers who want real solitude.

Flamingo Side: Birding-Focused Trails

Down at Flamingo, the trails trade sawgrass views for coastal bird habitat — and, fair warning, worse mosquitoes.

Snake Bight Trail — about 1.6 miles one way to a boardwalk over the bay, one of the best spots in the park for coastal species like Reddish Egret. Mosquitoes here are genuinely bad even outside peak season; long sleeves and a head net aren't optional.
Birding at Flamingo — the area around Eco Pond and the visitor center draws wintering ducks, Bald Eagles, and Roseate Spoonbills without requiring a dedicated hike.

If your trip is centered on Miami rather than Homestead, Shark Valley's 15-mile loop road is the equivalent of a Homestead-side day: walk, bike, or take the narrated tram into Shark River Slough, with a 70-foot observation tower halfway around. Bike rentals are available on-site for $25 if you want to cover the loop at your own pace instead of riding the tram.
