Royal Palm is the first real stop inside Everglades National Park on the main park road, and it earns its place. Two short trails start right here: the Anhinga Trail and the Gumbo Limbo Trail. Both are paved or boardwalk, which means strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who doesn't want to hike through mud can do this comfortably. That accessibility is a big deal in a park that can feel overwhelming to first-timers.
The wildlife here is genuinely close. Alligators sun themselves right next to the boardwalk, sometimes within a few feet of where you're standing. Birds are everywhere: anhingas, herons, egrets, spoonbills if you're lucky. The Anhinga Trail in particular has a reputation for putting animals right in front of you without much effort on your part.
The visitor center itself is small and straightforward. There's a shop with snacks, drinks, shirts, and a few souvenirs. Bathrooms are clean and parking is easy. Don't expect a big interpretive museum situation. This place is about getting you outside quickly, and it does that well.
If you're planning a day in the park, Royal Palm makes sense as your first stop. It's about four miles from the main entrance off SR-9336, so you hit it early before the midday heat sets in. Families especially tend to love it here because the trails are short, flat, and packed with things to see.
