A quiet trail into hammock and wetland habitat, beloved by birders chasing South Florida's most colorful species.
Lucky Hammock is a low-key nature trail on the eastern edge of Glenn Garrett Park in Homestead, running south about six miles before it gives way to the Everglades proper. No entrance fee, no crowds, no amenities. Just a well-maintained path through some genuinely good South Florida habitat.
Birders know this spot well. In a single hour, visitors have logged Swainson's hawks, short-tailed hawks, painted buntings, American kestrels, and the occasional out-of-range surprise like a Vermillion flycatcher. The mix of hammock edge and open agricultural land makes it productive year-round, but especially during migration season.
You'll want to park up near the highway and walk in. The road itself is part of the experience: quiet, flat, lined with native vegetation, and a solid option for a long bike ride if you'd rather roll than walk. Bring mosquito repellent. Seriously, don't skip that.
Lucky Hammock sits just outside the main entrance to Everglades National Park, making it a natural add-on to any park visit. If you're spending a few days in Homestead and want to stretch your legs somewhere that doesn't require a park pass, this is a solid first stop before heading deeper into the Glades.

This little trail is tidy, well maintained. It's one of those little trails just outside of Everglades Nat'l Park. It goes south about 6 mi or so & ends in the Everglades. You can go further if you want to trek into the swamp. The trail is on the east side of Glenn Garrett Park. Look for Glenn Garrett or you'll miss it. The canal alongside is a treat, lots birds & gators. There's no amenities & summer is full of horse flies. Happy trail.

You gotta park up the street by the highway. It’s a really nice lil road, lots of shot up signs though. Okay I’m going to write some more down here that has nothing do with the google review. I just need one review with over 200 words and I can’t be boned to write all that about the lil road. Oh, there’s an abandoned airplane manufacturing plant about 2 miles down the road. “No tresspassing” but whatever, yolo, right? Really fun! Really nice spot to see birds, shot up signs, and tagged up buildings. EDIT: went on a hike, got my car broken into and my wallet stolen. To whoever stole it, I would have bought you whatever you needed.

Nice trail but watch out for thieves if your a birder or anyone with valuables, had over $3,000 worth of birding equipment stolen. They're watching.

Great birding area just outside Everglades National Park. In an hour we saw Swainson's hawks, Red shouldered hawks, and short-tailed hawks; white-eyed vireos; painted buntings; blue-gray gnatcatchers; a kestrel; and a wonderful surprise: an out of range Vermillion flycatcher in all its vermilion glory.

Nice trail can take a long bike ride or walk whatever you prefer make sure to bring enough mosquito repellent thought
