Round Hammock Preserve

Round Hammock Preserve is a small natural area in Homestead, sitting along the agricultural fringe where South Florida's farmland meets its native ecosystems. It's the kind of spot that rewards people who like their nature low-key and unstructured. No crowds, no facilities, no ranger stations. Just a trail and some quiet.

Getting there involves about a mile of walking along paths that run beside working farmland. The preserve itself is a dense cluster of native hardwood trees, the kind of hammock formation that once covered much of this part of South Florida before development took over. It's a good reminder of what the land looked like before the farms arrived.

This isn't a destination you'd anchor a whole day around. Think of it as a quiet detour, maybe on the way back from Everglades National Park's main entrance, which is just a short drive south. If you're already in Homestead and want a few minutes of shade and stillness away from the highway, it fits that bill well.

Wear closed shoes and bring bug spray. The trail can be uneven and the bugs are doing their thing year-round. There's no signage to speak of, so download an offline map before you head out. Early morning is the best time to go, cooler temperatures and better odds of spotting birds working the tree line.
