Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park sits on 270 acres of natural woodland in southwest Miami, which sounds impossible until you're actually standing in it. There's a freshwater lake, bridle trails, hiking and biking paths, and a rec center with air conditioning when the Florida heat gets serious. It's a full-service campground with RV hookups (50-amp available), and the facilities consistently get praised for being well-maintained and clean.

Families do well here. The park has a water play area for kids, plenty of open space, and a laid-back atmosphere that's hard to find this close to a major city. Rangers patrol regularly, so it's a safe, orderly setup. Bring bikes if you can. The trail out to the lake is worth the ride.

RV guests should know sites vary in size. Larger rigs with tow vehicles will want to check site dimensions when booking. Nightly rates run around $60-70 for full hookups, which is a real deal for Miami. It's not a downtown-adjacent spot, so plan accordingly if you want to mix city time with camping.

For Everglades visitors coming from the north, this is a solid base. The park entrance on SW 184th Street puts you about 30-35 minutes from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center. You get a real outdoor setting at night and easy access to the park during the day, without paying Miami Beach hotel prices.

One of the cleanest RV campground I have been to. Their rec center is nice with plenty of space under air conditioning. Be sure to take the bike/hike trail to the nearby lake.

Let me start with how excited my family was to come to this park. We live a whole hour away. We drove here with high expectations. I called ahead of time because I have a 4 year old who wanted to do the slides. They told me on the phone he had to be 40 inches. He’s 45’. So we were good to go. Packed up the whole car and head out. To get here and be told my son had to be 48’ and he would not be allowed to be doing the slides. I explained I called and they miss informed us. I was already mad, but then another lady came to pay the entrance with two young girls and she was told the same on the phone than I was. She was also very upset. What made us even more mad was that we were told oh but you adults can do the slide. Yeah no shit, we did not come here for the adults we came here for the kids. This was a very bad experience and the staff is useless. We will not be back and will not recommend this to anyone. What a shame because if we would have been informed properly we would not even be here writing a bad review. Awful customer service.

Beautiful park. Lots of room. Good place to walk dogs. Bathrooms and showers clean. Nice people. The only thing that was concerning to me is the roads and the traffic=some of the worst. The Park is one of the best. The city sucks for traffic and roads.

Renegade 38ft w/jeep. Late May stay. $68 / night. POD 5 site 7. FHU 50A. Our site was just long enough for the RV & Jeep. Lots of rules but apparently parking on the grass is not one of them. So a lot of tow vehicles have wheels on the grass. Park rangers regularly patrol & so do the Sheriff Office. We felt safe. Lots of traffic outside the park but no noise issues. Pool was open. No bug issues. Shaded site but some sites are full sun in other pods. When leaving, Burr Ave provides a light controlled intersection. Publix Grocery is just down the road. Staff were friendly. Have registration available to prove your quarter-million RV isn't stolen. (LOL) Lots of biking trails.Expect traffic. We camped at Larry & Penny Thompson Memorial Park & Campground in a Motorhome.
