About

Most people think of Everglades National Park as the main entrance near Homestead. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City is the other door in, and it opens onto a completely different world. This is the Ten Thousand Islands side: mangrove mazes, open water, dolphins, and backcountry campsites you can only reach by boat.

Park rangers here know this ecosystem cold. Visitors regularly mention how much the rangers add to the experience, whether it's a quick conversation at the desk or a full boat tour where dolphins show up in numbers. The elevated second floor offers views worth stopping for on their own.

The visitor center itself is currently being rebuilt (signs point to a Winter 2025/2026 reopening), so expect some construction context on your visit. The new facility looks like a serious upgrade, and the parking situation is already solid. Rangers are still on-site and operational, so don't let the construction deter you.

This is also your launch point for backcountry camping trips into the islands. Permits, tide charts, campsite info, boat ramps: it's all here. If you're paddling or motoring into the backcountry, this is where you start. Bug spray is genuinely non-negotiable out here, so pack it before you leave the car.

Our visit to the Visitor Center was both enlightening and engaging. The Park Ranger was exceptional, providing expert insights into the Everglades’ immense biodiversity. A major highlight was our boat tour, where we were fortunate enough to spot over a dozen dolphins! The elevated second floor is impressively designed, featuring an interactive exhibit on local wildlife including the skills of s manatee, alligator, crocodile, and tortoise. It’s a beautifully facility that perfectly sets the stage for exploring the Gulf Coast.

The first time in the Everglades park but not the last! I camped on Pavilion key and i loved it! I had a motor problem with my boat near rabbit key and the rangers came to the rescue. Michael, the ranger, came to us in no time even the the difficult weather. I must thank Michael, Catelynn, Howard and Lloyd for there help. I felt took in care and secured. Without your help, it would surely runed my camping trip. These people are doing an incredible job. They make the park safe.

Beautiful area just remember to bring your bug spray or the mosquitoes may just carry you away. Hahahaha seriously though bug spray is a must but don't let that deter you from visiting. It is so beautiful 😍.

We drove by the Gulf Coast Visitors center as part of the Everglades National Park, however they are still under construction. Signs said Winter 25/26 so looking forward to a return visit as it looks to be really cool.
