About

Joanie's sits on the Tamiami Trail in Ochopee, about as deep into Big Cypress country as you can get before the road starts feeling like a dare. It's a weathered shack with outdoor tables, cold beer, and a menu you genuinely won't find anywhere else. Gator nuggets, frog legs, fried green tomatoes, grouper baskets. The kind of food that makes sense after a morning in the backcountry.

The setup is casual and self-directed. Walk in, grab a menu from the basket, help yourself to a drink from the cooler, find a seat. Your server comes to you. It sounds loose, but it moves fast and the staff keeps things friendly.

Outdoor seating is where the real atmosphere is. You're eating under the trees, surrounded by the sounds of the wetlands, with the kind of crowd that just got off an airboat or finished a long hike. Live music shows up on weekends. Families do well here, and groups fit right in.

It's a natural stop after the Nathaniel Reed Visitor Center or any time you're driving the Tamiami Trail between Miami and Naples. Wild Lime Adventures and other tour operators swing through regularly, which tells you something. Locals and visitors both treat it like a landmark, because at this point it basically is.

The key lime pie is worth saving room for. Order it with the fresh lime wedges on the side.

We were so happy to find Joanie’s Blue Crab Cafe after visiting the Nathaniel Reed Visitor Center. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and exactly what we needed after being out for the day. The Southern food was comforting and really well done, and the staff truly made the experience. Our server Lisa was wonderful. She was attentive, welcoming, and genuinely kind, which made us feel right at home. We also loved that the daily special worked perfectly for my vegan sister, which is not always easy to find. Everyone at the table left happy and full. This spot feels local and welcoming in the best way. We would absolutely come back.

We ate here on our Everglades tour with Wild Lime Adventures. Definitely a cool place to eat. Good was great. Atmosphere is awesome, just what you'd expect in the Everglades. The lady that was ruining the place was a hoot. We really enjoyed our stop there.

a day ago Fresh, local dishes. A menu you won't see anywhere else. We had the grouper basket, hot, delicious and prepared to order. You walk in, grab yourself a menu from the basket, help yourself to a beverage (adult and sodas), then find a seat. The waitress will come by and take your order. It's not fast food, but it's very tasty. I gave service 3 stars only because there was only one woman, and she was running around as fast as she could. It's on the way across the Everglades, if you're going for a boat ride or fishing, stop in!

Saturday May 2, 2026--end of dry season, no wait. Fast & friendly service. Loved the fried green tomatoes, crab cake salad & key lime pie (better with fesh lime rind from the wedges accompanying the food). Hubby enjoyed the men's bathroom scene.😉

Outstanding place for lunch. It’s a really fun atmosphere, fast and friendly service, and the food is 10/10 delicious. We will be back every time we are in the area.
