About

Everglades City sits on the Gulf Coast side of Everglades National Park, about two hours from Miami and 35 miles south of Naples. It's the western gateway to the park's backcountry, and the vibe here is genuinely old Florida. Weathered docks, working fishing boats, and the kind of quiet that reminds you how far you are from the interstate.

The Ten Thousand Islands are the main draw. This maze of mangrove islands and shallow waterways is one of the best places in Florida to kayak, canoe, or go out on a guided boat tour. Anglers come for snook, redfish, and tarpon. Paddlers come for the solitude. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center, right in town, is your starting point for backcountry permits and ranger information.

The town itself is tiny, maybe 400 people, so don't expect a lot of restaurants or shops. What you get instead is a real sense of place. The Seafood Festival in February draws a crowd, and the stone crab season (October through May) is reason enough to time your visit right.

If you're doing a full Everglades trip and only visiting the main entrance near Homestead, you're missing half the park. The Gulf Coast side has a completely different character: quieter, wilder, and more connected to the water. Everglades City is worth the detour.
