Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

Comfort food classics and a stocked country store, right before the road to the Everglades.

About

Some places just feel familiar the moment you walk in. Cracker Barrel does that on purpose, and it works. The rocking chairs out front, the general store packed with old-fashioned candy and cast iron cookware, the smell of biscuits somewhere in the background. It's a known quantity, and that's exactly the point.

Breakfast is the move here. The all-American spread, eggs, biscuits, gravy, country ham, hits the spot before a long day in the park. Lunch and dinner lean into the same comfort food playbook: chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, turnip greens. Portions are generous and the price is right. They've also added beer and wine to the menu if you want something beyond sweet tea.

This location sits right in Florida City, which puts it squarely on the route between Miami and Everglades National Park. It's a practical stop whether you're fueling up before a day of hiking and paddling, or winding down after one. Families do well here. Big groups do fine too. Takeout is available if you'd rather eat at the campsite.

The attached general store is worth a few minutes of browsing. Gifts, pantry staples, novelty items, the kind of stuff you didn't know you needed until you saw it. It's a full stop, not just a meal.

I'm sorry. Cracker Barrel used to be our go-to place while on the road. When we lived in upstate NY we had a Cracker Barrel in town and we went there for casual home style cooking. Since they added beer and wine to the menu and tried to go "woke" the chain has steadily gone downhill. Service is no better. Went to this one at 5:30 p.m. during what should be peak dining time. Used to have to stand in line at 4-4:30 p.m. This was nearly empty. I used to love their country fried steak. Used to be so big it couldn't fit on the plate. Now they use a different breading. And they put two different kinds of gravy on the potatoes and steak. The CF steak was nice and hot but the mashed potatoes were lukewarm at best. Sorry Cracker Barrel, but you need a new business plan.

Breakfast at Cracker Barrel is simply as essential to a Florida vacation as the sunshine. Everything was tip-top as always; however, the smell of the ham today—somewhat unappetizingly—reminded us of a French highway rest stop. 😬. For that reason ... only four stars today.

Food is good. We really enjoyed the all American breakfast. The only downside was the wait time for the food… it’s a bit slow…

Our vacations will not be complete without a Cracker Barrel experience. As usual the food was great.

Came in for a late lunch with my daughter and grandkids last Wednesday. We were taken care of by Christian. He was amazing. Very professional and attentive. The meals were delicious and bountiful. Love going to this Cracker Barrel. It's always good.
