Pineland Preserve

Pineland Preserve sits in Homestead, just minutes from the main entrance to Everglades National Park. It protects one of South Florida's rarest ecosystems: pine rockland habitat, a landscape of slash pines, native palmettos, and exposed limestone that once covered much of Miami-Dade County. Most of it is gone now. This patch isn't.

It's the kind of place you stumble into slowly. The light filters differently through pine canopy than it does in the open sawgrass prairie. The air smells like warm rock and dry scrub. It's a genuinely different experience from the main park, and that's exactly the point.

Families do well here, and dogs are welcome on leash (which puts it ahead of a lot of natural areas in the region). The trails are accessible and the setting is calm. No crowds, no admission lines, no gift shop. Just the preserve doing what it does.

If you're spending a few days in Homestead for an Everglades trip, this is worth a detour. It gives you a different angle on the same ecosystem, one that most visitors drive right past. That's their loss.
